What is this page?

It's a reasonable question - the title is vague, and we're here to clarify!

This page on our website is dedicated to helping you overcome the pits of artblock - from providing you with tips to get over it to handing you prompts, we're doing our best to help you our of your rut!

Art/Writers Block?

We know you've probably heard this a million times, but - take a walk! headphones off, head up! Take a good, long look at the world around you with eyes and ears unclouded by the pollution that mottles our everyday life.

Take a picture! Of the ground, of the sky, of a bird outside. Take a picture, and think about what makes it visually appealing, or boring, or bad.

What makes it work? Where does it fail?

Move somewhere else. Often when we're stuck in the same space, we're stuck thinking in the same way, which can limit our creative output. Go to a park, to a local library, to a bench at a train station - just move away from where you are now.

(Rotting in bed won't do you any good either).

Something we like to do when we're stuck (the both of us being writers), is to put down whatever we're working on and write a short story. And I mean a short story. 100-200 words is enough.

Puke your thoughts out onto the page - no restraint, no shame: just get it out.

Lower your expectations. Often when we're writing (or painting, or drawing, or anything else), we're held back by the fear of failure - something I like to do (that I definitely didn't come up with) is writing a 'dumbest version'.

Get your thoughts down on paper - it might be dialogue, it might be action, it might be single sentences describing scenes. It doesn't matter. Just get it out - because refusing to do so will only make you situation worse.

Resources

As of right now, we only have one resource available for your perusal, that being a padlet we've filled with brief prompts (that can apply to any discipline!). We encourage you to view these and use them if you're stuck in a rut - we have definitely used them more times than we can count.
